Hurumanu-Renewable Energy

Aim: To make a presentation that investigates different renewable energy's.

1. Hydro Energy - The Energy is generated through hydropower depends on the water cycle which is operated by the sun, this makes it a renewable power source making it a more reliable source other than fossil fuels that are quickly being wasted.

2. Solar Energy - Solar Energy is luminous light and heat from the sun that is harnessed using a reach of technologies such as solar heating & Solar Panels. It is a renewable resource,
it is obtained from the sun's rays. Solar energy is transformed immediately to electricity through a solar photovoltaic panel. Solar rays are collected off reflective surfaces and heats an object to process it that creates solar thermal energy.

3. Wind Energy - Wind Power or Wind Energy is operated by the wind to provide it to function and make power through wind turbines to turn electric generators, it can do other work like milling or pumping. Wind power is sustainable and renewable energy and has a much smaller impact on the environment compared to burning fossil fuels.

4. Wave Energy - Wave power is generated by the up and down motion of floating devices placed on the surface of the ocean, Let's say that wind produces waves and waves produce energy, it is also renewable energy. As the waves travel across the ocean, very high-tech devices capture the physical movements of the ocean currents and the flow to generate power.
This energy can be used to run turbines and there are plenty of places where the winds are strong enough to produce continuous wave movements or motions.

  1. Type: Hydro
  2. Is it used in NZ ? Hydropower is used in New Zealand
  3. Other Countries that use it?
  4. How is it used to generate electricity?
  5. Draw and label a diagram of the main parts of the electricity generator? This can be done on paper and uploaded or on a drawing program on your device. I do not want any Internet images or pictures. They must be hand-drawn using a ruler and labelled.

Section 4: Renewable Energy in the future.

List 10 ways that renewable energy will be used in the future to replace our current activities.

Hurumanu-Wind power

Extreme weather

Measuring weather.

Definitions:

  1. Anemometer: An instrument for measuring the speed of the wind.
  2. Beaufort wind scale: The Beaufort scale is to measure relating to the wind to see the conditions in the sea or/and on land.

Anemometer

MATERIALS

  1. Pencil w/rubber on top
  2.   x1 Pin
  3.   x2 Long sticks
  4. x4 Cups
  5. Sellotape
  6. Scissor

STEPS

  1. Put the stick on top of each other in an X shape and tape it in the middle.
  2. Get a pencil and put the X shape on top of the rubber of the pencil and pin it together through the tape of the X.
  3. Tape all the cup at the end of each end of the X so that can catch the wind.
  4. Take it outside and it should start catching wind... if there is any and depending on how strong it is.

Group Investigation.

Groups size: 5
Roles:

  • Timekeeper ( watch)
  • Counter
  • Recorder ( chromebook or refill )
  • Anemometer Manager ( Anemometer)
  • Wind Manager

Instructions:
  • Go to the measuring place and set up your wind gauge.
  • Make sure everyone in your group is ready to start their roles.
  • Record how many times it spins and record it in the table below.
  • Count the number of spins in 15 seconds.
  • Record it on your chart.

FINDINGS

We found that on the Field it was an open space but there was no wind at all and we got "0" spins in 15 secs, the old J block site was removed but has an open space and enough wind to go past, but unfortunately there was no wind and there were "0" spins in 15 secs, we were not sure what was happening. Whether the Anemometer was the problem or there was just no wind, we weren't sure but we did our best to make it at least go in the whole spin. We went to the new artificial grass hill area to see if we can get wind there, but the same results were coming over and over again. Once we moved to the Tennis Court gate there was a difference, we got a little breeze and it had much more wind power to make it spin all the way and we got "1" spin-in 15 secs.

Place name on school grounds                                    Number of Spins in 15 seconds
1.Field0
2.Old J Block site0
3.Grass hill in quad0
4.Tennis Court gate1

CONCLUSION:

The wind was calm and did not produce that much wind to make the Anemometer spin all the way around to call it a full spin, the Anemometer was unstabled between the rubber of the pencil and the pin connected to the rubber. We were given a comment from a gym teacher we should have added a small straw between them to make it more stable and catch more wind.

Spiritual Wellbeing

 This is a nature guide

Explain the 5 ways to being healthy in nature:

Swimming- By swimming in any type of water and Cooling off
Making shelter- To protect yourself from Poison ivy and keeping yourself safe from a cold or illness
Eating healthy- To keep your body in shape and to Keep yourself strong
Staying hydrated- If you drink water it fills your tank full and water is the best source of drink for you
Plant plants- To make more trees and plants for nature so you can live in a green healthy environment also feeding them with water

If I had a goal and turned it into a game what will it be?

-It would be to run the fastest and i would turn it into football and hopefully always be successful in football

Put a picture of your favorite outdoor place with a caption explaining why this is important to you and your Family

My family and my favorite place is Kyle park because we have midnight walks there and i have always loved the bmx track racing family there.

How I think the earth was formed

Earth formed around 4.54 billion years ago, approximately one-third the age of the universe, by accretion from the solar nebula. Volcanic out gassing probably created the primordial atmosphere and then the ocean, but the early atmosphere contained almost no oxygen.

Our new Kahui

                                     Our new Kahui

This week we moved into our amazing new classroom and our class is called Tieke and we moved in with sh, Our class is at the end closest to the auditorium and there are two other classes the class in the middle is called Riroriro and the one closest to the gym at the other end is called Mohua.

We waited in the auditorium learning the rules to the new buildings just to keep it looking good and making sure we look after the environment around it and inside it. We had a tour of the classroom straight after that my class and sh walked to our classroom and we had a tour inside it,There were alot of things going on inside of the building there were other classes in their like Japanese and so on.

We got showed all of the classrooms and what our new timetable will look like. The names of the classrooms are bird names and inside each class has a color from on the bird.

When I walked into our new buildings i saw... Some teared seating taking up quarter of the classroom and i saw amazing tv's with cool lighting around the outside. I saw a large space and really fancy fans I saw two senior classes right by our class outside there was fake grass with a hill and it looks good.

When I walked into our new building's i thought...That everything changed like a boring small classroom upgrading to a new fancy classroom i thought why couldn't they upgrade the phones as well as the class.I thought that the grass looked cool but it must hurt if you fall over on it.

When I walked into our new building's i felt...I felt that everything was gonna change because there would be more people inside of the class and lots of things would be going on.

My Favorite part of the classroom...

My favourite part of the classroom was the three tv's with the speakers i like them because they look cool and its clear and there is actually some lighting around the tv's what ever color is on the tv's the outline will have that color too.

Our Fun Wednesday

Puberty lesson

On Wednesday the 18 of September a man came to our school to talk to us about what are the changes in puberty and what happens in life...

All year 7's and 8's went to the auditorium feeling uncomfortable about this subject but the man made it feel funny because he told some jokes and i think that every single person from that room has learnt something that day..

He taught us about how to look after your body and different parts of the body. In my opinion it helped me because now i know the changes that will happen to me, for example he told us boys can: Grow Taller, Grow hairs, Have a deeper voice and much more and girls can: Grow taller, Grow wider, Grow some hairs and get larger breasts. He told us that the best people to talk to if this happens to you is your parents...

Mega air

Straight after the lesson of puberty we had to line up in classes and we were waiting to walk to mega air everyone was excited but we got told we only had an hour there...

As soon as the teachers released classes ts and sh walked to mega air first when we were walking down the driveway it smelt bad because apparently chickens get killed there but it also smells like chicken nuggets when the dead smells gone.

We were excited to bounce but first we needed to wait for the other classes to arrive... as soon as they arrived we all watched a little clip and on that clip it said the rules to mega air...

As soon as we could bounce we ran to all different types of things like dodge ball, the half pipe, the air bag and many more... I had a really good time there and hope to go there again sometime i think everyone enjoyed there time there.

Sport...Well kinda

The reason why i named this sport...well kinda is because we did -Tug of war,Ki-O-Rahi, Capture the flag and i don't know if all of them are sport...

First the people who did sport first go to mega air and the people who did mega air first [witch is us] we do sport. So we are like switching events.

First we had to get into 6 teams and we named our teams after a country we were the Aussies

The First sport we did was Capture the flag and it was intense but we managed to win by two points

Next sport was Ki-O-Rahi and we had a draw on that one it was fun

Lastly we did tug of war and we dominated that one our team won by 5 points

Points for the sports:

Capture the flag: 2-0
Ki-O-Rahi: 1-1
Tug of war: 5-0

Straight after all of that the yr 13's put up a kahoot for us to do on how we liked the sport event because they wanted to know our opinion on the idea and also because they came up and were the leaders in the sports so thank's to the yr 13's for setting the sport's up i really enjoyed it and i think everyone else did to.

Our world 2019-2040

Today in the auditorium we watched this documentary film called 2040 and Damon talked about how to make the planet a better place to live in for the future. He went around in many places asking children what they want to see in the future 2040.

What surprised me: I was surprised about how Bangladesh uses solar panels and make a grid that they share with their village and it turns out to be cheaper that way.

What worried me: I was worried about what people do to turn out successful in the future or be unsuccessful and if you have a bad impact in the environment in the past you would make it a bad and gross future.

What Excited me: I was excited to see what to do to make the world a better place and all of the steps he went through explaining helpful facts for the earth around us and to make city's more greener.

What would i like to see in 2040: I would like to see more green/nature in the city's with a machine in the water monitoring what goes in and outside of the water. To make not only land but water a better place.

What are 2 things i learned:
-If you have a healthy impact in the past you will make the future better.
-The ways of connecting energy to the world and giving the world more energy by using solar powers.
