What do the song lyrics of "Paint it Black" mean? Like so many other famous rock and roll songs from the 1960s, it's tempting to
say that "Paint it Black" is just another worded tune about drugs. Whilst musicians usually are the ones trying to persuade the
public that their music actually has a deeper meaning, Mick Jagger, who is the lead singer of the Rolling Stones, offered little evidence when asked about the meaning of "Paint it Black" and almost seemed ok with it being written off as just another song about drugs.
"Paint It Black" may have been partly inspired by just another bad acid trip, but it wasn't difficult for Hollywood to connect the meaning of the song to the Vietnam War. After all, the song was released in 1966 while the war was still in full swing.
Line Meanings-
"I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love, both never to come back."
In the song, the narrator looks on as a hearse and the other black cars in a funeral procession carry "flowers" and his "love" to a cemetery for burial.
Song Lyrics-
I see a red door
And I want it painted black
No colors anymore
I want them to turn black
Dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head
Until my darkness goes
And they're all painted black
With flowers and my love
Both never to come back
And quickly look away
Like a newborn baby
It just happens everyday
And see my heart is black
I see my red door
I must have it painted black
And not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up
When your whole world is black
Go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing
Happening to you
Into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me
Before the morning comes
